Panama Canal

Engineering Wonder

Panma is located at a point in central America where there is a narrow istmus, providing ideal conditions for the building of a locks canal in 1914 (each lock is equipped with chambers 330 meters long by 33.5 meters wide in which ships are raised or lowered by water, using the principle of connecting chambers). This engineering marvel is 80 kilometers long, which are transited by ships in about 8 hours. It allows a direct inter-oceanic connection between the two great Oceans, Atlantic and Pacific. It is a key link in the main routes used by international shipping and it is used by more than 13000 vessels of different types each year.

The Panama Canal is considered as one of the seven wonders of modern engineering, and one of the ten most important engineering works of the XX century. It facilitates transport and contacts between peoples and continents, helping to unite the World.
